WIDE AWAKE AT 3AM? YOUR BODY HAS A PLAN YOU DIDN’T ASK FOR....

Perimenopause sleepless nights

If you’ve been waking up at 3am wide awake, heart racing, mind planning your entire life you’re not alone.  And more importantly… you’re not broken.  If you’re a woman you are just riding the perimenopause rollercoaster.


What’s happening in your body?

During perimenopause, your hormones aren’t just declining they’re fluctuating like a bad Wi-Fi signal. Your sleep becomes lighter and your stress tolerance drops.


Two key hormone friends are supposed to help you sleep:


The Energiser – Estrogen

  • Boosts serotonin (feel good hormone)

  • Supports melatonin (sleep hormone)

  • Regulates body temperature

The Calmer – Progesterone

  • Acts as a natural sedative on the brain

  • Anti-anxiety hormone

  • Makes you feel like “ahhhh, finally sleep”


Signs your hormones are having fun at night

  • Feeling the stresses of life more than you use to

  • Falling asleep easily… but waking during the night

  • Feeling “wired but tired”

  • Waking up with a racing heart like you just ran a marathon in your dreams

  • Night sweats or temperature swings

  • A brain that suddenly decides 3am is prime time for overthinking


So why 3am, because it is very inconvenient!

Your body’s glucose (blood sugar) drops. Normally, insulin manages this, but perimenopause makes your cells less sensitive.  Resulting in your body thinking, “ALERT! EMERGENCY!” and releases cortisol and adrenaline, and just like that, you’re wide awake.


How to make nights less dramatic

  • No sugar or alcohol 3 hours before bed → avoid the classic sugar crash surprise

  • Dinner = protein + healthy fats + slow-releasing carbs → think kumara, quinoa, brown rice, lentils

  • Avoid going to bed hungry → a small protein snack keeps your blood sugar from yelling at you at 3am


Remember, your body isn’t sabotaging you, it’s just adapting. These wake-ups are like little messages “Hey! I need a bit more support here!”
