How installing a new belief helped me stop binge eating

For years I believed I was a binge eater. I used to say I had a “sugar monster” inside me, one that appeared whenever cookies, cake, chocolate, or peanut butter were around. (To be fair, it had excellent taste.)

When it showed up, I felt like I had no control. My solution, I thought, was simply to try to contain it. The narratives I kept hearing reinforced that belief, that some people just have to rely on endless willpower around food.

But beliefs are powerful. When you believe something about yourself long enough, your brain starts looking for evidence that it’s true.

Last edition I shared the pull factors that started shifting things for me, the pleasure reasons that made nourishing my body more appealing than bingeing on foods that didn’t serve me.

Those pulls naturally fed into a new belief I chose to install:

“I nourish my mind and body in healthy ways.”

Using PSYCH-K practice, I visualised what that looked like for me - eating whole foods, resting when needed, feeling calm and content. I focused on the feelings it created: happiness, freedom, and ease.

Combined with my new belief and pulls, moments like today are handled with awareness and ease.

So earlier today I had a moment where I thought about going back for a second spoon of peanut butter straight from the jar (head hunger). But instead of reacting automatically, I paused and asked myself:

“Is this really what I need right now?”

I realised I had a low mood after a difficult conversation and it’s that time of the month and what I actually needed was comfort, a hug and a little oxytocin. Once I recognised that, the urge for the second spoon simply faded.

By believing that I nourish my mind and body in healthy ways, and acting in alignment with that belief, I’m building new neural pathways that make these choices easier and easier and most importantly I am giving what my mind and body actually need. Plus when I make these choices I give myself a little “well done Micaela” just for that extra boost of positive reinforcement.

It’s incredible what can change when you have the right tools and it’s available to you too.
